Growing and Connecting After School with Kids Like Me

The first two weeks of our Kids Like Me After-School Enrichment Program have been an inspiring start to a new year of creativity and connection. Designed for children and teens ages 6–17 with autism spectrum disorder and other learning differences, the program offers a welcoming space where every participant can build confidence, make friends, and discover new interests.

Each afternoon on our Sherman Oaks campus, students dive into a mix of hands-on learning and social engagement. Classes like Drama, Music and Movement, Game Design, Comic Book Creation, and Basketball have been filled with energy and curiosity. Students are exploring new skills, finding their voices, and enjoying the chance to learn in a supportive, inclusive setting.

“Our philosophy centers around inclusion and enrichment,” says Fatima Gutierrez, Program Director of Kids Like Me. “Each class is designed not only to teach new skills but to create opportunities for connection and confidence. We want every student to feel supported and celebrated for who they are.”

A New Innovation for 2025

This year brings an exciting enhancement to our program through a partnership with Parker Anderson Enrichment, a leading provider of after-school programming. Their experienced instructors bring fresh, engaging lessons in science, art, and technology. Each Parker Anderson teacher is supported by Help Group staff members, ensuring that activities are adapted to meet the unique needs of our students while preserving the supportive environment that defines Kids Like Me.

“The Parker Anderson teachers have been incredible with our students,” says Gutierrez. “They’ve brought a wealth of creativity and structure, and their curriculum has blended seamlessly into our Kids Like Me model. Together, we’re providing an experience that’s both fun and engaging.”

Highlights from Our First Two Weeks

Kids Like Me has injected new energy and enthusiasm into our Sherman Oaks campus. All the classes take place in our newly remodeled enrichment center and playground. In Cooking, students proudly plated their first homemade recipes. In Dance, self-expression took center stage as students moved with growing confidence. LEGO Robotics sparked collaboration and problem-solving, while students in our fitness class focused on goal setting and developing a healthy lifestyle.

Parents are already noticing the impact. One parent shared:

“Before this program, we struggled to find any after-school option that worked for our son. He needed something more geared to his learning style and we just couldn’t find it. Since joining Kids Like Me, he’s excited every day to come to The Help Group. He talks about the different projects and how much fun he’s having. Even his little brother likes coming to play on the playground. It’s been such a positive experience for our whole family.”

Tailored Support for All Abilities

To ensure every student feels successful, the program is structured around two levels of support:

Sunshine — for participants with higher support needs who benefit from more individualized attention, with an emphasis on social connection and life skills.

Adventure — for students who enjoy working more independently and engaging in group-based activities.

No matter their needs or experience level, each participant is encouraged to take pride in their growth and enjoy being part of a community that understands and supports them.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to continue building on our after-school schedule with new 8-week sessions starting in February and April, each featuring a refreshed schedule of enrichment classes. These programs lead into our signature Kids Like Me Summer Camp in June, a highlight of the year that gives students a chance to deepen friendships and explore new activities.
