Families of children and teens with autism and other special needs are invited to join Kids Like Me for Family Fun Day on Sunday, January 31st from 2 to 4 pm. This free event will feature a sensory-friendly screening of the highly acclaimed Pixar film “Inside Out” in The Help Group’s Autism Center Theater at its Sherman Oaks Campus. The theater is located at 13164 Burbank Boulevard, and parking is free.

“Many families of children with special needs have a hard time finding weekend activities that are fun and appropriate for the whole family. They may be afraid to try new experiences out in public,” explains Kids Like Me Director Nicole Webb. “With the cold, rainy weather we’re experiencing this winter, we wanted to offer families the opportunity to see a movie together in a safe and welcoming setting.”

In recognition of the sensory processing challenges some guests may have, the sound on the film will be turned down, and there will be low lights kept on so that the theater is not completely dark. The chairs will be arranged loosely so that moviegoers can get up easily and take a movement break along the side or back of the theater. There will also be a concession stand open before and during the movie, where guests can purchase popcorn and other healthy snacks, as well as water and juice.

Weather permitting, children will be able to enjoy The Help Group’s sensory-friendly playground before, during and after the movie. The safe, outdoor space also provides an opportunity for parents to connect with each other and make new friends while they supervise their children.

While there is no charge for Family Fun Day, space is limited in order to ensure a positive experience for everyone. Families MUST RSVP by Wednesday, January 27th, to Nicole Webb by phone at 818.778.7136 or via email at nwebb@thehelpgroup.org
