June 2023 Newsletter

To our Advance LA Community,

We wish all the graduates congratulations! This is a huge milestone for a young person and deserving of lots of celebration. And congratulations to the parents of the graduates as well. We know that it can feel emotionally overwhelming to see your child achieve a milestone that you may have only dreamed was possible. We wish you joyous celebratory festivities!

In this month’s blogpost, we discuss the mixed emotions that go hand-in-hand with graduations. While happiness is at the forefront, there can be feelings of stress and worry about what comes next. Check out this month’s blogpost for tips to better understand the emotions that both the graduates and their parents may be experiencing.

Advance LA’s mission is to help our clients advance to independent adulthood. Our Life Skills Coaches meet with their clients remotely, or in person, to provide support and guidance in areas including academics, executive functioning, time management, organization, social/dating skills, job/internship obtainment and maintenance, and independent living skills.

Please contact us at advancela@thehelpgroup.org for more information.

Wishing you all the best,
Jeri Rochman, JD, MS

For some neurodivergent young adults, graduation is often very emotional as it marks the end of a defined time of life as well as the beginning of the unknown. It can be helpful for parents to be aware that even a happy event like a graduation can cause a neurodivergent young adult to experience mixed emotions during the ceremonies and parties. Experiencing stress, fear, and anxiety along with joy, relief, and anticipation are all to be expected for a young adult and are part of the normal graduation process.
