Dear Help Group Friends & Families,

Now that we’re in February, a time when love takes center stage with Valentine’s Day, and we honor the rich tapestry of Black History Month, I am reminded of the profound significance of connections in our lives.

At The Help Group, our commitment to creating meaningful connections goes hand in hand with our mission to provide a supportive and caring environment for our students and families. It is these connections that form the foundation of our community, building a network of care, understanding, and shared experiences.

Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love and connection, serves as a poignant reminder that our bonds with each other are essential. Whether it’s the warmth of a teacher-student relationship, the camaraderie among classmates, or the unwavering support from our dedicated staff, these connections contribute to the unique essence of The Help Group.

As we commemorate Black History Month, we also recognize and honor the pivotal contributions of Black individuals who have shaped history and continue to influence our world. It is a time to celebrate diversity, acknowledge the strength found in our differences, and form connections that transcend cultural boundaries.

This month’s newsletter explores the theme of connections in various aspects of our community. From heartwarming stories of growth and resilience to features that highlight the importance of understanding and embracing diversity, we hope to inspire a sense of unity and belonging.

Thank you for being an integral part of The Help Group community. Together, let’s continue to nurture the connections that make our community strong, compassionate, and vibrant.

Warmly,

Shayne Horan, Ed. D.
Vice President of Schools

Strengths-based Learning: Helping all Children Realize and Achieve Their Limitless Potential – Strength and Progress

SPOT stands for: Strength observation, Progress over perfection, Opportunity to shine, and Teach, try, and tap into strengths. This month, we are delving into the first two segments of the SPOT method in detail, offering strategies to integrate these practices into your child’s daily experiences.

SCHOOLS & PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS

The Help Group’s Bridgeport School and Bridgeport Vocational Center provide a comprehensive selection of six vocational tracks for students with mild to moderate needs. From early career exploration, beginning in kindergarten through high school, and beyond through the Bridgeport Vocational Center, Bridgeport students build their job skills to develop a career portfolio that helps to match specific employment agencies with their individual skillset.

Taking part in activities that promote social interactions with peers while overseeing a process such as collecting attendance and managing the lunch program, these students learn to follow multi-step tasks, gaining proficiency in vocational responsibilities on campus. As their skill set expands within the campus environment, they are empowered to grow within various on-campus roles and eventually, explore opportunities beyond the campus confines. Bridgeport High school students are encouraged to participate in our Career Technical Education (CTE) academies, encompassing diverse fields like agriculture, arts media, child development, construction/manufacturing, fashion design/merchandising, and hospitality. Collaborating with LA Valley College and West LA College, successful completion of specific courses earns students badges of completion for 21st Century Employability Skills, providing valuable additions to their resumes and job applications.

ALUMNUS HIGHLIGHT

Connecting the Virtual and Physical Realms Through Art

You may have heard of Gabe Gault from his nationally acclaimed murals but did you know he was a Summit View West alum? Gault graduated from Summit View West in 2009 after completing Middle School and High School on the Culver City campus. His art has always been outstanding but now it’s available for the public to appreciate.
Known for immortalizing cultural icons in his murals such as Kobe Bryant, Nipsey Hustle and Muhammad Ali, Gault was selected from a nationwide search for artists to paint the largest mural of its kind in the US (pictured above,) and chose to pay tribute to the original farmers of the land in his remarkable Glass City River Wall in Toledo, Ohio.
Employing classical painting techniques while using modern mediums, Gault explores and celebrates culture with innovation and forward movement at the core of his artistic vision. His latest creative explorations has led him to the world of VR where he’s connecting the virtual and the physical worlds of art to capture his process and share it with his audience. We are so incredibly proud of his accomplishments and look forward to seeing more of his art. You can learn more about Gabe by visiting his website.
