Dear Help Group Friends & Families,

As March unfolds, I am struck by the enduring power of community, particularly in times of transition and renewal. March not only signals the arrival of spring but also invites us to reflect on the bonds that sustain us through change.

At The Help Group, our dedication to creating a sense of belonging and support remains steadfast. We understand that our community thrives on the strength of its connections – connections that weave together the fabric of our collective journey.

In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Women’s History Month, we are reminded of the diverse tapestry of experiences that shape our community. It is a time to celebrate resilience and renew our commitment to empathy and understanding, as we build a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

In this month’s newsletter, we delve into the theme of community, exploring stories of perseverance, triumph, and solidarity. From highlighting the achievements of students who continue to grow, thrive, and flourish academically and socially, to showcasing initiatives that promote diversity and acceptance, we aim to inspire and uplift.

Thank you for being an essential part of The Help Group family. Together, let us nurture the bonds that bind us and forge ahead with compassion, empathy, and unity.

Warm regards

Shayne Horan, Ed. D.
Vice President of Schools

THE SPOT METHOD – PART 3 OF A 3-PART SERIES

Written by Dr. Shayne Horan
Last month, we discussed the importance of using strengths-based learning models, emphasizing their role in celebrating each child’s unique skills, paving the way for their future success in academics and life. We introduced the first two elements of SPOT method, Strength and Progress, within an approach focused on recognizing these talents through mindful observation.

SPOT stands for: Strength observation, Progress over perfection, Opportunity to shine, and Teach, try, and tap into strengths. This month, we are delving into the last two segments of the SPOT method in detail, offering strategies to integrate these practices into your child’s daily experiences.

SCHOOLS & PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS

BUILDING COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS
Communication is the basis of all human interactions and the ability to utilize AAC tools has been profoundly beneficial for students of The Help Group’s Sunrise School such as Liam and Kayla. Liam has been a student of Sunrise since he was 4 and has made remarkable strides in his communication skills, using functional sentences on his iPadKayla, who joined Sunrise at age 9, has also flourished socially and academically with the support of AAC tools. These learning tools have not only enabled Liam and Kayla to connect more deeply with their community, teachers, and peers but have also empowered them with a voice. They have found avenues to express themselves, creating meaningful interactions with staff, family members, and peers alike, and communicate with a stronger sense of self and belonging, reaffirming their place within their community and highlighting their value as individuals. See Kayla and Liam in action on our ASK THE EXPERT video below.
